Vegan Sweets Wrapped in Sustainability: Kaek Blady’s Eco-Friendly Approach

Environmental responsibility is a global imperative. Companies are taking steps to minimise their carbon footprint and adopt ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) practices. At Kaek Blady, we are part of this green revolution by offering our healthy sweets in metal packaging. Through my personal story, I would also like to share with you why I am a big advocate of sustainability and why metal packaging is one of the best options for the food industry when it comes to packaging.

The Marvel of Metal Packaging

Metal packaging, particularly aluminium and steel, has become a champion of the environment. Its history dates back to 1823, when Englishman Peter Durand revolutionised packaging by patenting the first tin can. In 1900, the introduction of the double-seamed, three-piece can marked a major milestone in the history of metal packaging. This two hundred year history illustrates the importance and the survival of the metal can in packaging technology. It’s a choice that offers numerous benefits for both the environment and consumers. Let’s take a closer look at why we have chosen metal packaging as a cornerstone of our ESG strategy:

Recyclability

A champion of recyclability. It can be recycled again and again without losing any of its quality or strength. It’s like a timeless capsule that, at its best, can be passed from generation to generation. As a mother, it was also important to me to preserve precious resources for future generations. By choosing metal packaging for our healthy, vegan kaek ajwa products, we not only made a quality choice, but also wanted to reduce the amount of waste we send out into the world every day for our customers.

Reduced Waste

Without exaggeration, choosing metal packaging is like giving a helping hand to Mother Earth, and the figures bear this out. Metal is the most recycled beverage packaging in the world, with an impressive global average recycling rate of 69%. In Europe, the rate is even more impressive: 85.5% of steel packaging and 73% of aluminium beverage cans are recycled, making metal packaging the most recycled packaging material on the continent.

These statistics paint a vivid picture of the impact that can be made by choosing metal packaging. It is a conscious choice that diverts waste from overburdened landfills and protects our oceans from pollution. A gesture as simple as it is important, demonstrating our responsibility to protect the beauty and natural wonders of our planet. Opting for metal packaging is not just a smart choice; it is a heartfelt commitment to minimising our impact on the world around us. So every time you choose a Kaek Blady product, remember that you are contributing to a brighter, cleaner future for all.

Energy Efficiency

Producing metal packaging from recycled materials is a process that requires significantly less energy than using virgin resources. When we chose this type of packaging, we not only made an environmentally friendly choice, we also reduced the carbon emissions per pack. This is a small but significant step towards resource conservation and environmental sustainability. Now you can see why it’s worth choosing a slightly better quality product in a metal box than one wrapped in plastic, can’t you?

Preserving the Legacy

I don’t think it’s a secret that I didn’t invent this sustainability solution. I believe that every family, without exception, has a few old, slightly worn, beautifully decorated biscuit, tea, or coffee tins that have been handed down to us by our ancestors. One of my favourite heirlooms, inherited from my grandparents, is a biscuit tin that is filled with all kinds of goodies, kaeks and gingerbread cookies each year from the end of November. I just couldn’t bear to let it go.

Not for sentimental reasons, but purely from a food industry perspective, metal packaging is one of the best solutions for the food industry, and here’s why: metal packaging has the ability to preserve the freshness and quality of food.

I’ve seen first-hand how metal packaging extends the shelf life of our products, reduces food waste and ensures that our customers enjoy the same high quality experience every time they eat our handmade and homemade, artisan treats.

I think it’s important to mention that our organic ingredients and the fact that we don’t use added sugar to preserve our products also led us to the hygienic attributes of the metal packaging when deciding which solution to choose. It provides an airtight seal that protects our kaek ajwas and makroutas from external factors such as light and moisture. This means our sweets stay as fresh and delicious as the moment they were made, without the need for preservatives.

On this voyage of sustainability, where the choices we make today will affect generations to come, let’s continue to explore innovative ways to reduce waste, conserve resources and nurture a planet that thrives with us. Together, we have the power to create a future that is not only greener, but more resilient and filled with the joy of indulging in treats that are both delicious and kind to the earth.
